> Veterinary Practice Act 2003

The Veterinary Practice Act 2003 came into effect on 1 September 2006. The purpose of the Act and its regulations is to:

  • Promote the welfare of animals;
  • Ensure consumers are well informed as to competencies required of veterinary practitioners;
  • Ensure acceptable standards are met by veterinary practitioners – to meet public interest and national/international trade requirements and;
  • Provide public health protection.

> Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act

  • An Act relating to the regulation, control and prohibition of the supply and use of poisons, restricted substances, drugs of addiction, certain dangerous drugs and certain therapeutic goods;
  • To establish a Poisons Advisory Committee and to define its powers, authorities, duties and functions;
  • To repeal the Poisons Act 1952 and certain other Acts;
  • To amend the Police Offences (Amendment) Act 1908, the Crimes Act 1900, the Motor Traffic Act 1909 and certain other Acts; and
  • For purposes connected therewith.

> Stock Medicines Act

An Act relating to medicines and other animals for the purpose of enhancing the quality of animal production, protecting the environment and safeguarding the health of stock and other animals, and for other purposes.

Regarding steroids, read an Order made under the Stock Medicines Act to regulate the use of injectable steroids.
