2018 June - Amendments to companion animals and other legislation

The NSW Parliament has passed a Bill detailing a number of changes to companion animal and prevention of cruelty to animals legislation

Most notably a veterinarian is now required to ear mark or tattoo the ear of a female companion animal at the time of desexing unless the veterinarian believes the procedure cannot be undertaken safely or humanely or the owner does not consent.

In summary:

  1. It is important therefore for veterinarians to ensure they obtain consent from a client before ear marking or tattooing a companion animal at the time of desexing.
  2. A veterinarian is able to refuse to ear mark or tattoo on humane or safety grounds

A summary of these changes is available from the NSW Parliament website.
