Biosecurity regulation amendments

The NSW Biosecurity Regulation (2017) previously mandated that pigs must not be fed or have access to mammalian products in stock food and that ruminants (e.g. cattle, sheep, goats and alpacas) must not be fed or have access to vertebrate products in stock food, except as otherwise exempted in the Regulation.

The Regulation was amended on 17 February 2023 to make it clear that there are circumstances where it is not reasonably practicable for a person to prevent pigs from eating something in their environment which meets the definition of prohibited pig feed.

These circumstances include but are not limited to:

  • A pig having access to a placenta of its own origin or that of a herd mate,
  • A pig having access to the naturally deposited faeces of wildlife, herd mates or other stock
  • A free-range pig having access to carcasses of herd mates or wildlife.

There are several other amendments, including declared biosecurity events relating to skin nodules on cattle, goat depots and property identification codes.

The full details can be found here.
