Black market cat drugs for treatment of feline infectious peritonitis

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has recently become aware of media reporting (Black market cat drugs studied as COVID-19 treatment, 31 August 2020, The Age), in relation to the unregistered compounds known as GS-441524 and GC376. These compounds, which are reportedly being used to treat cases of feline infectious peritonitis, are not approved for use by the APVMA.

Clients and veterinarians involved in the unlawful importation of unregistered veterinary chemicals may be subject to significant financial as well as civil or criminal penalties.

Further information about possible penalties and importing veterinary chemicals is available from this letter to Dr Julie Strous of the AVBC from Steven Harris, Director Compliance and Monitoring of the APVMA.
