Mosquito-borne diseases

The mosquito season is not over yet. In recent weeks there have been detections of mosquito-borne diseases in mosquito isolates and sentinel chickens in certain LGAs, and the first confirmed human case of Murray Valley encephalitis in NSW since 2011.

Fact sheets on Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) and Japanese encephalitis (JEV) are available from NSW Health.

A JEV vaccine is available for people who are at higher risk of catching the virus. You may be eligible for a free vaccine based on where you live or if you work in some higher risk industries. Information on eligibility is available on the NSW Health website.

Mosquitoes also carry viruses such as Ross River virus, Kunjin virus and Barmah Forest virus.

Keep mozzies away and take the steps to protect.
