VPB: Stress and depression in veterinarians – impact of perceived skill transferability 26 July 2016

This research explored the role of lowered occupational mobility in suicide risk in Australian veterinarians. In particular, the study examined whether suicide-related thinking and behaviour (e.g., self-harm) increased over 12-months if veterinarians desired to leave the profession, but perceived that their skills to be undervalued by other professions and potential employers.

AVA: Antidote for Toxin para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) 08 July 2016

Please note the following information on a new toxin being released for wild dog and fox management in Australia, as it may result in off-target intoxication of domestic pets. The toxin is para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) which induces methaemoglobinemia following ingestion. There is an antidote (IV methylene blue) which needs to be administered promptly. This may impact practitioners in peri-urban and rural areas where wild dog and fox control is being undertaken.

DPI: Peri-urban pig project 09 February 2016

All pig owners must obtain a Property Identification Code for their property regardless of the number of pigs they own or the intended purpose of those pigs (pet, commercial or for private consumption).

The Department of Primary Industries is currently running a peri urban pig project. This project aims to increase the number of pig owners in NSW with property identification codes (PIC) as is required under the Stock Diseases Act 1923 to allow tracing in the case of a disease outbreak. It is also to provide information regarding pig feeding requirements, specifically the risks of swill feeding.
