| The administration of the Board’s business continues to run very smoothly. There were some staff changes during October. The full-time staff are now myself, Noelle O’Connor and Glenn Lynch. We are assisted by two part-time office staff, Gwen Cruise and Joanna Chan. Gwen and Joanna are both studying at UNSW. The workload is cyclical and we make very good use of our resources by using part-time staff. The advent of the Veterinary Practice Act 2003 will necessitate many changes in our procedures in the office, particularly in the areas of hospital licensing and the discipline process. We have commenced preliminary planning so that we will be ready to meet the challenges the administration of the new act will present. The Auditor-General has concluded the 2002-2003 Audit of the Board’s Financial Statements and his report reflects the policies of the Board which have ensured that the Board has consolidated the sound financial base it commenced to build in 2001. The profession will benefit from continuing good and conservative financial management and reporting. This will be reflected in the level of fees the Board will set from time to time, to fund its activities. Implementation of the ‘new act’ may cause additional expense for the Board in some areas. I will work with the Board, both now and after the changes occur, to minimise these expenses. The ‘new act’ will mean that the Board is reconstituted, and the Veterinary Surgeons Investigating Committee will cease to exist. While we do not know the commencement date, it is possible that the changes will occur before the April 2004 Boardtalk is published. Therefore, I take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the members of the Board and the Committee for the opportunity to work with them and assist them in the tasks allotted to them. I encourage all registered veterinary surgeons to consider offering their services as members of the Board and the Committees which will be formed under the Board in the future. I am happy to provide information about the duties of Board and Committee members and the administration of the Board over the phone or by e-mail. |

I also wish to acknowledge the support, service and commitment of Noelle O’Connor and Glenn Lynch to the Board during 2003. We are a very small workplace and the office could not function without their ability and willingness to cover a broad range of duties. The support staff who have worked with us during 2003, James Campbell, Mae-wah Boadle and Jacqui Cummins, have also provided excellent service to the Board and I acknowledge the contribution they each made during the year. I hope that I, and the staff of the Board, will be able to continue to assist the Board and the Veterinary Profession to give the same high standard of service in 2004. |
